Gift guide

Gifts for someone who meditates

Someone who's meditated for 10 years wants something different from someone who downloaded Headspace in March. 12 gifts, sorted by which one you're buying for, with the books first.

The short answer

  • Best for a sceptical beginner: 10% Happier by Dan Harris (2014). A TV news anchor has a panic attack on air, then investigates meditation like the reporter he is, jokes included.
  • Best for learning the technique: Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana (1991). A Sri Lankan monk explains posture, breath and the wandering mind as plainly as the title promises.
  • Best gift that lasts all year: 365 Days of Meditation by Airplane Mode Publishing House (ours). One page a day from January 1 (a line from a teacher, a short reflection, one thing to practice), built for someone who keeps starting and stopping.
  • Best for an experienced meditator: The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa (John Yates, 2015). A 10-stage map of the practice for someone who wants to know exactly where they are on it.
  • Best for a meditator curious about Buddhism: 365 Days of Buddhism by Airplane Mode Publishing House (ours). A daily one-page guide to Buddhist philosophy, for someone who knows the breath and wants the teaching behind it.
  • Best non-book gift: A zafu, the round cushion meditators sit on, or a kneeling bench if their knees dislike sitting cross-legged.

The table has all 12, beginners first. If you don't know how long they've been sitting, buy from the top half. An experienced meditator will enjoy a good beginner's book, and a beginner handed a 10-stage manual will put it on a shelf.

ForThe giftWhy it works
Beginner, still sceptical10% Happier · Dan Harris (2014)The book for anyone allergic to incense. Harris is funny about his own ego, and the title is an honest promise.
Beginner, wants instructionsMindfulness in Plain English · Bhante Gunaratana (1991)The clearest manual in print. If they only ever own one technique book, make it this one. More meditation books, sorted by need.
Beginner, wants it gentleThe Miracle of Mindfulness · Thich Nhat Hanh (1975)Mindfulness taught through washing dishes and eating a tangerine. It began as a long letter, and it reads like one.
Beginner, keeps starting and stopping365 Days of Meditation · oursOne page a day for a year: a line from a teacher (the Buddha, Marcus Aurelius, Thich Nhat Hanh), a short reflection, one thing to practice. About 5 minutes. ★4.8 across 32 Amazon ratings.
Beginner, likes a voice in their earA year of Headspace or Waking UpGuided audio for someone who can't sit in silence yet. Headspace is the gentler start. Waking Up, from Sam Harris (no relation to Dan), suits someone who wants the ideas explained as well as the practice.
Any levelA zafu, or a kneeling benchA round cushion, usually filled with buckwheat hulls or kapok, that lifts the hips so the knees can drop. A bench suits knees that won't fold. Either gets used every morning.
Experienced, past the first yearWherever You Go, There You Are · Jon Kabat-Zinn (1994)Short chapters from the man who brought mindfulness into hospitals. The book for year 2, when the questions change from how to why.
Experienced, likes a systemThe Mind Illuminated · Culadasa, John Yates (2015)10 stages from a distracted beginner to a settled mind, by a teacher with a neuroscience background. It reads like an engineering manual, which is the appeal.
Experienced, sits zazenZen Mind, Beginner's Mind · Shunryu Suzuki (1970)Talks by the founder of the San Francisco Zen Center, edited into short chapters. Practitioners reread it for decades. The Zen shelf has the rest.
Experienced, curious about Buddhism365 Days of Buddhism · oursA daily one-page guide to Buddhist philosophy, for the meditator who's started asking where the practice came from. New in September 2026, so it's unlikely to be on their shelf.
Experienced, sits every dayA small singing bowl, or a plain timerOne strike to start, one to finish. A cheap kitchen timer does the same job and lets the phone stay in another room.
Any level, ready to go furtherA day retreat or an 8-week coursePlenty of meditation centres run one-day retreats, and MBSR (Kabat-Zinn's 8-week course) is taught in hospitals and centres in many cities. A voucher with a date on it gets used.

Meditation gifts for beginners

A beginner needs a reason to sit and then a method, in that order. Harris supplies the reason. Gunaratana supplies the method, and Thich Nhat Hanh is there for someone who'd like it gentler.

If they'd sooner be talked through it, give an app. Headspace and Waking Up both sell yearly plans, so check they aren't already paying for one. Our free how to start meditating guide covers the first week and is worth forwarding with the gift.

Meditation gifts for an experienced practitioner

Someone who's sat most mornings for 5 years owns the classics and a cushion with a dent in it. Go deeper into their tradition. The Mind Illuminated is for the systematic type, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind for a Zen student (check the shelf first, it's often there twice).

Plenty of long-time meditators end up curious about the tradition the practice came from. 365 Days of Buddhism is for them: one page of Buddhist philosophy a day, new in September 2026. It's the wrong gift for someone who keeps their practice strictly secular.

The free daily Buddhism email uses the same one-page format, and Buddhism for beginners maps the ground in one read.

A gift that lasts all year

A page-a-day book is 365 small openings, and the first one is January 1. Give it in December and it's in use a week later.

365 Days of Meditation is built for that. Each page has a line from a teacher (the Buddha, Marcus Aurelius, Thich Nhat Hanh), a short reflection and one thing to practice, and takes about 5 minutes. It came out in July 2026 and has ★4.8 across 32 Amazon ratings.

2 honest alternatives. Mark Nepo's The Book of Awakening (2000) is the warmer daily reader, for someone who wants a thought each morning and no technique. A year of Headspace or Waking Up does the same year-long job in audio. The daily meditation books comparison has the full shelf.

365 Days of Meditation is the wrong gift for someone 3 retreats deep who wants technique in detail. A page is a page, so give them Culadasa. For everyone else, the free daily meditation email sends the same one-page format each morning, which is a cheap way to see if it suits them.

Meditation gifts that aren't books

The cushion is the classic. A zafu sits on a zabuton, a flat mat that spares the ankles, and the pair gets sat on every morning. A kneeling bench does the same job for someone who can't sit cross-legged for long.

A small singing bowl is half ornament, half timer. Keep it small: a big bowl in a flat at 6am is a gong.

For an experience, book a day retreat at a local centre or an 8-week MBSR course, the program Jon Kabat-Zinn built. Give it with a date attached. Open-ended vouchers go to a drawer to expire.

Timing

Order paperbacks by mid-December. After that, the Kindle editions of both our books can be gifted by email with Amazon's "Buy for others" button, on a delivery date you choose.

Our meditation books and mindfulness books guides go deeper on the reading. Stress relief gifts covers the person who could do with starting.

Common questions

What do you get someone who meditates?

Match the gift to how long they've practised. A beginner does well with 10% Happier by Dan Harris, Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana, or a zafu cushion. An experienced meditator is better served by The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa, a day retreat, or 365 Days of Buddhism if they're curious about the teaching behind the practice.

What is a good meditation gift for a beginner?

Mindfulness in Plain English (1991) for the technique, 10% Happier (2014) if they're still sceptical, and 365 Days of Meditation if they keep starting and stopping. It gives one page a day from January 1, about 5 minutes each.

What is a good gift for an experienced meditator?

Something deeper in their own tradition. The Mind Illuminated (2015) for someone who likes a system, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind (1970) for a Zen student, or a day retreat. Ask what's on their shelf first, because the classics are usually there.

Is a daily meditation book a good Christmas gift?

It's well timed: unwrapped in December and in use from January 1. 365 Days of Meditation gives one page a day for a year, and Mark Nepo's The Book of Awakening is the warmer, less technical option.

What are good meditation gifts that aren't books?

A zafu cushion (or a kneeling bench for bad knees), a small singing bowl to start and end each sit, a yearly Headspace or Waking Up subscription, or a place on a day retreat or an 8-week MBSR course.
