First question: are they studying it or just into it? A student owns the textbooks and has opinions about pop psychology. A fan wants the pop psychology, and the good kind exists.

Second question: do they already own Thinking, Fast and Slow? It's the most gifted book in the field. Many copies are sitting unread at page 90.

For a psychology student

Skip anything that looks like revision. They want reminding why they chose the subject, and Sacks does that better than anyone. Opening Skinner's Box is the second choice, since it turns the experiments they're memorising back into stories about people.

Behave is the gift for a student heading towards neuroscience or research. It's long, so it's also a gift for someone with a holiday ahead of them.

For a therapist or counsellor

They read clinical books for work, so give them something that isn't work. Frankl if they somehow haven't read him. Otherwise go sideways into philosophy, which most therapists like and few have time to study.

The over-gifted list

Thinking, Fast and Slow, Atomic Habits and The Body Keeps the Score are the 3 psychology-shelf books most likely to be owned already. The last one is also a heavy read about trauma and a strange thing to unwrap in front of family.

The page-a-day option

365 Days of Psychology is for the fan more than the student. It gives a page each to the experiments, the thinkers and the biases, which is the right depth for someone who likes knowing why people do things and won't sit an exam on it.

A student would use it differently: as a 5-minute warm-up that keeps the whole map of the field in view while the course drills into one corner.

Common questions

What is a good gift for a psychology student?

Oliver Sacks's The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat or Lauren Slater's Opening Skinner's Box. Both cover material close to the course while reading like stories. Avoid textbooks and anything on their reading list.

What is a good gift for someone who loves psychology?

Robert Sapolsky's Behave for a serious reader, Susan Cain's Quiet for an introvert, or a daily reader such as 365 Days of Psychology for someone who'd like one idea a day.

Is Thinking, Fast and Slow a good gift?

It's an excellent book and the most commonly gifted one in the field, so there's a fair chance they own it. Check first. It's also dense: plenty of readers stall a third of the way in.

What is a good gift for a therapist?

Something outside their work reading. Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning if they haven't read it, or a philosophy book such as Sarah Bakewell's How to Live.

What is a good psychology book for a beginner?
