Ex-Uber Couple's Daily Tao Te Ching Passes 10,000 Copies in Its First Year
365 Days of Tao spreads the complete 2,500-year-old text across a year of five-minute mornings. The whole book is free by daily email, and translated editions from major international publishers are on the way.
July 30, 2026. 365 Days of Tao, the daily-format edition of the Tao Te Ching from independent press Airplane Mode Publishing House, sold more than 10,000 copies across Amazon and direct channels in its first year. The book reached #1 Best Seller in its Amazon category, holds a 4.7-star average across 200+ ratings, and has been signed by a handful of major international publishers for translated editions. Across its catalog of daily readers, which includes 365 Days of Philosophy and 365 Days of Zen, the family-run press counts more than 50,000 readers, with a 4.6-star average across 1,000+ Amazon ratings.
The format is the product: one page per day, carrying a few lines from the Tao Te Ching and a short essay on what they meant in ancient China and what to do with them now. A page takes about five minutes. Dated pages also give the book an unusual sales calendar: December gift weeks tripled its normal volume, and January ran nearly as hot, because a book that starts on January 1 is a New Year's resolution with a cover.
The press is run by Priscilla Baerts - Oppenhuis de Jong and Casper Oppenhuis de Jong - Baerts, a married couple who met while working at Uber. The one-page-a-day format is Priscilla's, and it predates the books: the couple first tried the idea as a reading app, which never found its audience. "Hardly anyone wanted the app," she said. "The same idea on paper worked almost immediately. A book turned out to be the right machine for it."
"We wrote these books for ourselves, to keep a daily reading habit alive," said Casper. "Long, difficult books kept defeating us, and most daily books we could find were too soft to bother with. So we wrote the ones we wanted to read. We still read them every day, usually on the toilet, which is where honest daily reading happens."
The series is written under the house pen name Dae Lee and edited by Robert Morgan. The couple also credits the press's proofreaders and translators, and the commentators and translators who walked the Tao Te Ching for two millennia before them.
The unusual part of the business model: the press gives its bestseller away. A free daily email delivers the same page every morning, in step with the print edition, with a printable companion journal. Readers can take the whole year without paying anything. The press pairs the books with a library of free guides on Taoism and daily practice, from what the Tao actually means to which translation to pick and what Taoism says about burnout.
365 Days of Tao is available on Amazon in ebook, paperback, and hardcover, in English and Spanish. The free daily email is at airplanemodepublishinghouse.com/tao.
